Harkat Studios

About Harkat Studios
As a collective driven film lab, Harkat focuses on the development of conscious medium-based art on film and encourages a discourse on ‘Indian’ thought on film, based on the principles of ‘Cinema of Prayoga’, as proposed by film historian Amrit Gangar. We’ve been running the 16mm film festival in Mumbai since 2017, with its primary focus being the showcasing of international works made on the medium of celluloid film, and combining it with handmade film workshops and facilitating making on film. We also mounted a curatorial called ‘India on film’ at the Serendipity Arts Festival 2019, investigating the relationship between the art and craft of making on film in the Indian context.

Harkat is an international boutique arts studio with a passion for film, new media, community art spaces and contemporary art. Based in Mumbai & Berlin, Harkat takes many forms and identities across disciplines & related creative industries. As an alternative performance & arts space, Harkat has hosted more than 400 shows in the past years in the mediums of theatre, film, music, community projects & contemporary art. We support the new, unheard, upcoming, exciting, cutting edge, the political, the forgotten, nostalgic, melancholic, soul stirring, the beautiful & more. And that’s what Harkat is. Harkat.
