SPECTRAL

from 2022 to 2025

SPECTRAL stands for Spatial, Performative & Expanded Cinematics - Transnational Research at Artist-run Labs. It is a European cooperation project co-funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Commission, a 4 years adventure led conjointly by Baltic Analog Lab, Crater-Lab, LaborBerlin, Laia - Torre, Mire and Worm.Filmwerkplaats.

Research developed on new Expanded Cinematic Arts devices will be documented and shared on throughout the duration of SPECTRAL, as follows :

Projects by Crater-Lab

Project by LaborBerlin

Our idea is to develop a state-of-the-art and modular 16mm film projector using only open-source technologies and non-proprietary/commonly available spare parts. We believe that especially the central mechanical elements of the old projectors – claw mechanism, shutter wheel and film transport - are in most cases so well engineered that a new development here would be a waste of time and energy. Instead, we want to build the projector on the basis of an existing - and easily available - projector mechanism. The same applies to the optics: lenses that are compatible with projectors made by Eiki, Bauer, Bell & Howell and Hokushin are available worldwide in good condition. This projector should cater to the needs of contemporary film artists, archivists and projectionists alike.

Projects by Mire

To open up the possibilities of cinema, Mire explores the notion of “Wandering”: itinerancy, adaptation to multiple environments. The seminar take place in three stages and gather a high-flying team of artist-inventors, in order to develop mobile tools, designed to allow wandering and itinerancy (easy to transport and set up, as well as self-sufficiency in electricity).

Four devices are developed within this program. Here you will find the complete documentation on every project :

The documentation process is also documentated :
