The Cineworks Annex is located in the basement of the Iron Works building in the old part of Vancouver. Its continued existence is due to a handful of dedicated volunteers. The equipment and parts were collected over the years, often sourced when commercial lab operations shut down in the city. Over the course of the last few years it is slowly transforming from storage space to working studio.
The Annex houses a fully stocked darkroom with a tempering bath for colour chemistry, buckets, a lomo tank or so and our new Cramer processor, able to handle up to 400 ft of super 8 or 16mm at a time. The space also offers a Steenbeck, JK printer, 16mm model C contact printer and Oxberry animation stand, all in various degrees of working order. The Annex has hosted a local artist in residence program since 2010 and provides space for independent screenings and events. The facilities are available for rent to Cineworks members. Workshops are offered on a regular basis to share techniques, knowledge and skills related to analog film production.
Cineworks receives funding from Canada Council for the Arts, British Columbia Arts Council and the City of Vancouver.
